Chenoa Barhydt – The Heroic Rise of Native Americans @chenoab12
Over the last several years many Native American leaders have shared with me what will be required to make a real difference in the lives of Native American youth. The current situation on reservations is bleak. I am spearheading the development of a program that builds up the hope and strength of our Native American youth to get them to dream again and realize that they matter. My commitment is for our country and the world to benefit from a future derived from the currently untapped potential of all Native Americans.
Willie Baronet – Busty Naked Girls Oil Wrestling: from homeless signs to pornographic spam – my MFA journey @williebaronet
After selling my ad agency in 2006 I got an MFA in Arts and Technology at UTD. In the process my long held beliefs about art were deconstructed. I soon found myself creating art using my collection of homeless signs, and taking photographs of scars, nipples, bellybuttons, hairballs and taillights. In my final art show I videotaped the mouths of over 90 women (in 10 languages) reading vile, bizarre pornographic spam. “Havana Ginger gets big fat meat cigar to suck on.” I mean, really.
Bobby Bridgwater – Dallas Pride Cheer @DALPrideCheer
The non-profit organization, Dallas Pride Cheer, is an adult group of cheerleaders, ranging in age from 18-51, who love to perform and have a passion for community service. We support both local and national charities and non-profits like AidsArms, Susan G. Komen, Bryan’s House, and Make-A-Wish Foundation. We do this by performing in and sometimes national events as well as working various events to support these causes.
Aaron Ginn – Show Me the Money! : A Biopsy of Why Healthcare Needs to Change @aaronlginn
The healthcare crisis has the ability to do significant damage to the US, yet most people are not engaged in the conversation. I want people to be engaged and to not believe this is a subject area for “experts”. What am I going to say? I will show how a simple office visit sets off a wave of perverse incentives, unnecessary costs, and backwards practices.
Bill Holston – Welcoming Strangers and the Path of Human Rights Work @billholston
For over twenty years I’ve had the privilege of representing people seeking refuge in America, because they fled countries where they were imprisoned and tortured for their political views and religious beliefs. I’ve been changed by the encounters with these brave people. I’ve shifted from thinking that I’m doing a good deed, to the idea that I’ve received more than I’ve given. Along the way, I’ve learned much about the world and myself.
Randy Hoyt – Art and Story in Totem Poles @randyhoyt
The Native Americans of the northwest Pacific coast carved magnificent vertical columns in cedar, commonly known as “totem poles.” In this talk, web developer and myth enthusiast Randy Hoyt will discuss how, when, and why these poles were crafted; explore their relationship to a tribe’s traditional stories and myths; and examine what anyone working in a creative profession can learn from these exquisite works of art.
Ben Judy – User Experience is not Interface Design – or – stop turning “UX” into another office bingo buzzword @benjudy
“User Experience” is becoming just another buzzword, if it isn’t one already. But this word really means something to the people who are passionate UX professionals and practitioners. I’m giving this talk for people who recruit, hire, or manage UX designers, user researchers, and information architects. I’ll help them understand what UX really is, what it isn’t, and why practicing the true UX discipline is so much more than wearing a hot job title.
Matthew McGarity – The Art of Caregiving @mcgaritydotme
My wife has an incurable & devastating neurological disease which affects the lives of her and everyone she loves. I serve as her primary caregiver. Come to hear my advice on how her condition is one of the best things that could ever happen to us — or you.
Jon Mertz – Your Glass of Life @ThinDifference
As we look at teens in our home or community, we see a little of ourselves, and we want to sit down and tell them a few things we have learned along life’s way. Teens today have so much in front of them, more choices to make, more possibilities of unintended directions. We acknowledge this fact, yet our teaching moments are lacking or outdated. It is their life story. And, we can deliver the guidance through an analogy of a glass; it is a message which teens can grasp and lift up.
Shyam Patel – Saving the World From Bad Design @shyampatel
I believe design thinking can save the world. We live in a world that has become jaded to bad design. Everything in our world is designed from our toothbrush to our education system. Why are we so willing to tolerate bad design when it impacts our lives in so many significant and meaningful ways? I for one am mad as hell and I am not going to take it anymore!
Charles Perry – When You’ve Made The Sale, Shut Up @cfperryjr
Using examples from life, like when our partner gets us to agree, but then keeps going on, until we get resentful, to situations at work and when bartering, a key to success (and be gracious) is to stop talking when you’ve won.
Simon Salt – Never Mind The Bollocks Learn How To Speak English: The British Guide @incslinger
As an Englishman living in Texas for the past 9 years and someone with an American partner, I have spent a fair amount of my time repeating myself, explaining myself or questioning what was just said to me. With the recent interest in things British, like the Royal Wedding, I want to explain some of the finer points of the English language in an attempt to close the language gap.
Sean Scogin – Emotion on the Web – The Tragic Tale of Lucidending @seanscogin
On March 5, 2011, a Redditor by the name of Lucidending wrote a simple post, titled “51 hours left to live.” The post quickly gained popularity, and soon a powerful outpouring of emotion was seen from the Reddit community. In this talk, I will discuss how emotion is conveyed on the web, and the pros and cons of consuming such emotional content through the lens of Lucidending’s controversial post.
Nicholas Thomas – The Paradox and The Curse: Complacency, Thought Leadership, and Innovation @nicholaswthomas
I’m passionate about innovation, (esp. in tech and software) and I’m fascinated about what makes certain people and companies innovative, while others stagnate. I’m especially intrigued by “The Abilene Paradox,” & “The Curse of Knowledge” and how these phenomena interact with each other.
Micah Boswell – When The Internet Hands You a Lemon, Make Virtual Lemonade! @luminuslabs
Funny, Self-Deprecating, Enlightening talk on how one publicized incident turned into a global meme, and threatened to end my career, family life and friendships. In the process, I learned all about the power of love, humility and the “Streisand Effect.” Back from the brink of personal failure, the talk would focus on elements of personal redemption, SEO, SEM and online image management.
